Review : The Marlton Hotel, New York

IMG_1655

For my latest stay in New York I decided to take a break from Times Square and move to Lower Manhattan. Looking for a cute boutique hotel, I chose the Marlton Hotel and was not disappointed !

Built in 1900 in the heart of Greenwich Village, and recently restored, its atmosphere is both timeless and trendy. The rooms are small but this is unfortunately almost always the case in New York. It may be a shoebox, but what a pretty one !

The luxury fabrics, wooden floor and faux fur bedspreads make the room particularly comfy. The colors are tastefully chosen with touches of gold and mint, while the contemporary painting on the wall brings a pop of fun. The sparkly clean bathroom has a nice size with a beautiful shower and vintage faucets.

My room came with breakfast included, which turned out to be my only disappointment about the Marlton. While I was initially charmed by the lovely room where it is served, the breakfast itself is composed of three tiny pastries, one small piece of gingerbread, coffee and juice. If you are a breakfast lover like me, this clearly won’t be enough and on the second day I went to buy some extra food at Starbucks.

The neighborhood is young and trendy with the nearby NYU, and 5th Avenue just at the corner. You will find that same creative energy in the lounge of the hotel. With its welcoming fireplace, it is the perfect spot to relax after a busy day of visits or settle to check your e-mails in you are on a business trip. Several food option are available with an espresso bar, cocktail bar and the Mediterranean restaurant “Margaux”.

Category : Luxury Boutique Hotel

Where is it? 5 W 8th St, New York. In Greenwich Village, the closest metro station is W 4 St.

How much? I paid 286$ per night, which is expensive but not crazy for this value in NYC. Breakfast is included. Complimentary WIFI. A general tip for all your hotel bookings, be careful with “non included taxes”. This is not a small thing with the New York City tax (5.875%), the New York State tax (8.875%), the occupancy tax (2$) and the Javits tax (1.50$ which goes to the city’s convention center !)

Pros : Location, Atmosphere, Staff

Cons : Size of the room, Breakfast
