Review : Hotel La Semilla, Playa del Carmen

IMG_7379This lovely boutique hotel is everything you wouldn’t expect to find in Playa del Carmen, the land of massive beach resorts.

La Semilla’s 9 rooms offer a vintage and authentic atmosphere with furniture picked from flea markets, and the feeling of being protected in a little cocoon. It describes itself as “rough luxury” which is a very accurate definition and is part of the label Design Hotels.

Each guest is considered like being part of La Semilla’s little family. In the morning, you can enjoy a delicious fresh breakfast in the patio, while chatting with Alexis, the Swiss owner. At night you can also come back to enjoy a glass of wine. There is a great attention to detail, whether it is in the decoration or the service. Coming back after a long day of visits, you will find a fresh jar of water in your room or even a little gift on your pillow. This would always put a smile on my face.

The only missing point could be that there is no swimming pool, but the sea isn’t too far and you can ask for a beach kit at the reception. If you wish to sunbathe in a quieter atmosphere, you can also do it on the rooftop terrace. If it is raining (which can happen but generally it doesn’t last too long) you can borrow a book or a board game. And on a sunny day why not use one of the free bikes of the hotel. I noticed only on the last day that there was no TV in my room, which means that I was truly disconnected!

To be completely honest Playa del Carmen isn’t my favourite city, too much touristic hassle for my taste. I wish I had known it when it was a still a fisherman’s village. But La Semilla is an oasis of calm and a perfect option if you wish to be located in a nice area, just nearby the animated “Quinta Avenida”. Then it is up to you to enjoy Playa del Carmen the way you want, to party, relax by the seaside or just as a base to explore the archaeological treasures of the region (you can read here about my experience in Yucatan).

  1. Looks like a really nice place. Some boutique hotels are really great, La Semilla seems to be one of them. Being part of “a family” is great when having holidays. It makes you feel so home and makes the trip so much more enjoyable :)
